Xiaoquangou Gr

Period:
Triassic

Age Interval:
Middle – Late Triassic, (TJ2, TJ3, TJ4, TJ14a, TJ15)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The named section is located at Xiaoquangou, Fukang City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. And it was named by the Comprehensive Research Team (Team 46) of Xinjiang Petroleum Administration in 1956. Consists of the upward succession of the Karamay Fm, Huangshanjie Fm and Haojiagou Fm.

Synonym: It was originally called Xiaoquangou rock series, which refers to a set of uneven interbedding of gray-black, gray-green mudstone and sandstone located above the Cangfanggou Group, and its age is Late Triassic. In 1957, Tang Zukui et al. divided it into Baiyanghe bed and Huangshanjie bed, and in 1959, Xie Hong et al. renamed the rock series as series. In 1960, Yang Shizhong changed the series to group and the layer to formation. In 1981, the compilation group of regional stratigraphic tables in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region changed Baiyanghe Formation into Karamay Fm, and divided Huangshanjie Formation into Huangshanjie Fm and Haojiagou Fm, except for the reserved group.

Lithology and Thickness

Karamay Fm, Huangshanjie Fm and Haojiagou Fm are all sandstone-dominated. See the detailed description of each formation of this group.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The yellow-green and grey-green conglomerate at the bottom of Jimusar to Urumqi is conformable contact with the underlying lower Triassic Shaofanggou Fm. In the north Junggar Basin, the underlying unit is the Jianshangou Fm of lower Triassic.

Upper contact

The top part is in pseudo-integrated contact with the Lower Jurassic Badaowan Fm

Regional extent

Junggar Basin, Turpan Basin, and Tarim Basin.
